Breeds of Goat

Indian breeds:

1.  Assam Hill Goat: This breed is found in Assam and its adjoining areas. The body coat is black and sometimes white and the breed is famous for meat production. It is a poor milk yielder. Selected animals of this breed maybe suggested for utilization by the poor farmers of Assam and its adjoining areas for their economic upliftment.

2. Black Bengal: Found in Assam and Bengal. It is famous for production of excellent quality meat.

3. Kashmiri: They are found in high hills of Kashmir and Tibet. They are also popular in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Body is covered with a fine silky hair, 4-5 inches long, beneath which is a fur like undercoat of greater fineness, the warm fur, Pashmina.

4.Pashmina: They are found in the Ladakh region and are good yielder of fine Pashmina fur.

5.Chamba: Found in the Himalayan region and they produce good quality fur.

6. Gaddi: A breed of Himalayan region.

7. Chegu: It is a breed of Himalayan region producing milk, meat and pashmina.

8.Jamnapari: Found in pure form in the Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh and is a dual-purpose breed with the ability to produce good amount of milk and meat. It is the biggest and the most majestic breed of goats in India. The breed has no uniform colour but animals bear a white coat with tan markings. Daily milk varies from 2.25 kg to 2.7 kg with a fat content of 3.5%. 

9.Barbari: Found in Agra and Mathura of Uttar Pradesh and in lesser number in Delhi and Haryana. It is a dual-purpose breed.

10Beetal: Found in Gurdajpur district (western part) of Punjab. It resembles Jamnapari but the goats are smaller in size and weight. The breed bears a long ear and a roman nose. The common colour is red or tan with heavily spotted with white. It is a milch type breed with an average milk yield of 1.5 kg per day. This breed has been tried at Goat Research Station, Byrnihat, Assam Agricultural University (Phone No. 0361 2896273) and utilized for crossing with Assam Hill goats and such crosses maybe suggested for farmers’ economic benefit. 

11.Marwari: It is dual-purpose breed found in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

12.Bekaneri: Found in Rajasthan.

13.Kathiwari: Found in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

14.Lohi: Found in Nagpur and Wardha of Maharastra and Nima district of Madhya Pradesh.

15.Berari: Also found in Nagpur and Wardha of Maharastra and Nima district of Madhya Pradesh.

Exotic breeds:

1.  Toggenberg: A breed of Switzerland. It is famous breed for milk production with an ability to produce 5.5 kg of milk per day.

2.  Saanen: This is also a breed of Switzerland with a milk yielding capacity of 2-5 litres per day.

3.Alpine: Found in France.

4. Nubian: Found in Africa, Egypt and Ethopia.

5.Anglonubian: A cross between Nubian and Indian breed.

6. Angora: A Turkish breed.
